Informal Pre-Retreat Get Together in Rhumbar at The Mirage Hotel For
many of you arriving on Thursday or earlier, we will be getting a head
start on the Retreat activities. Thursday evening we will
informally meet at about 8pm in the Rhumbar
right by the south entrance to The Mirage Hotel. This
stylish lounge and lush outdoor patio inspired by the colors and moods
of the Caribbean. Enjoy views of the Strip and even a cigar
from the
humidor on the patio, or take a frozen drink to-go from Rhumbar’s
highly stylized frozen daiquiri bar.
This is very informal, and we have
no
reservation, let's just show up and find a table or 2, or 3, etc (ask
the hostess where the lawyers are sitting).Watch for updated location info. (We used to meet every year in Fontana Bar at Bellagio, but that lounge is often a card room now.) Return to Index

The
Improv Comedy Show at Harrah's Hotel
We
have now made a tradition of attending a Comedy show on the Friday
night of the Retreat, after our Welcome Party. Based
on its
reputation as one of the best comedy shows in Vegas, a large group of
attendees are again planning on doing the The Improv comedy show (take
escalator, next to Main Cage, to the 2nd floor)
at Harrah's
Las Vegas,
located across The Strip
from the
Mirage. The show usually sells out on Friday
nights.
Discount Improv tickets can be purchased with your Retreat Registration for
$28 per person (includes tax and fees - regular
ticket price is $29 plus taxes and fees making the regular total cost
over $35).
The show starts at
10:30pm but it's a good idea to be there by 10pm to get your seats.
If you have
already ordered your ticket(s) with your Retreat Registration, you
can pick them up with your Retreat materials at the Retreat Sign-In on
Friday afternoon, or at the Welcome Party Friday evening. The last few years our Retreat attendees (due to getting the tickets early) got fabulous seats. Retreat attendees had all the VIP seats ringing the stage, and most of the closest tables to the stage. The fear that a group of criminal defense types may become fodder for the comedians never materialized, but maybe this year?

Informal
Post-Retreat Get
Together in Red Square at Mandalay Bay Resort
For
anyone staying longer than Sunday, we have started a tradition the past
few years of meeting at Red
Square
(next to
rumjungle, between the parking garage and the casino) inside Mandalay
Bay.
Red Square has a huge selection of vodka stored in lockers which are
kept well below freezing. They even supply mink coats and
hats
for vodka
tasting inside the giant freezer. Another nice touch is the
top
of the 25 foot long bar made of ice to keep your drinks cold. You can take the Las Vegas Monorail at the back of the the Flamingo Hotel to the MGM Grand (it runs from 7am to 2am). Then you can take a free 24-hour tram from the Excalibur Hotel (kitty-corner from MGM) to Mandalay Bay.
Walking,
Monorail, Double Decker Buses, Shuttles, and Taxis
When walking around you might feel like walking the length of the strip. It’s enjoyable and there is plenty to see, what you have to realize is that those buildings on the end of the Las Vegas Boulevard are huge, hence, they look real close. From the Stratosphere to Mandalay bay is a little less than four miles, so if you’re thinking about setting up your workout regimen, you've picked a good vacation destination. If
you would rather ride, the Las
Vegas Monorail (running
from 7am to 3am Friday through Sunday and 7am to 2am Monday
through Thursday) has trains arriving every few minutes, and takes you
up and down The Strip in 15 minutes or less at speeds up to 50 mph.
There are Monorail stations at the Sahara, Las Vegas Hilton,
Las
Vegas Convention Center, Harrah’s / Imperial Palace, Flamingo
/
Caesars Palace, Bally’s / Paris Las Vegas, and the MGM Grand.
You can walk from Tuscany Suites to the Flamingo Monorail
station
at the back of the Flamingo Hotel. Monorail tickets may be
purchased online
in advance, at station ticket vending machines (TVMs),
and at station customer service booths. There is a free tram from the Excalibur Hotel (kitty-corner from MGM) to Mandalay Bay that runs from 9am to 10:30pm daily. There are 24-hour buses on The Strip, including the new 97 passenger Deuce Double Decker Buses. You now have a chance to double-down your trip on the Strip with new double-decker buses adding a London touch to Vegas. Finally you'll be able to look out the window and see the glorious landscape of the Las Vegas Strip instead of tourists in SUVs. There is a free shuttle every half hour between the Rio Hotel and Harrah’s, Bally’s / Paris, and Caesars. Pick up locations are: Rio - at the Carnival World Buffet entrance, Bally's / Paris - at the Limousine entrance, Caesars Palace - at the Augusta Tower valet entrance, and Harrah's - at the Shuttle / Bus / Trolley drop off. Shuttle schedule is Mon - Wed: 10am-1am and Thurs - Sun: 10am-4am. Pick-up times are approximately every 30 minutes from each location. Sorry, no luggage allowed on shuttle bus. And taxi service is also available just outside the front doors of Tuscany, and at each hotel. Attracting 30 to 40 million visitors each year, Las Vegas has fine-tuned the art of customer service. Extend your stay to enjoy this city that epitomizes the quintessential American entertainment experience. To help plan your trip, visit http://www.VisitLasVegas.com/. Weather
The average high temperature for April in Las Vegas is 78°F (26°C) and the average low approximately 51°F (11°C) with about 25% humidity, but it can get warmer or cooler than these averages. We recommend a jacket or sweater for the evenings and maybe for the session room. Las Vegas averages 320 days of sunshine a year too, with average precipitation for April at 0.20 inches. Tipping Since Las Vegas is a service-based city, tipping is recommended according to www.Vegas.com. In case you were wondering, here are a few suggestions for leaving appropriate gratuities: Bellmen Usually $1 a bag will do, but an extra tip is suggested if you use them to make show reservations, hail cabs, or provide other additional assistance. Taxi Drivers These drivers could be the difference between missing an event and getting there with time to spare, plus they’ll help you with your bags and provide some local insights on the way. Plan on about 15 percent of your total fare to thank them for their efforts. Valet Parking and Maid Service Attendants We suggest $1 to $2 each day. Dealers Tipping a dealer is a little trickier. You can give the dealer a tip in between hands or spins, and this tip can range from $1 to as much as you want to give. You also can wait until the end of your session and tip the dealer then. Keno and Bingo Runners $1 every few rounds is acceptable and suggested even if you aren't winning. Cocktail Waitresses About $2 per round is sufficient for a small group (2-3 people). Increase that amount for larger groups. Don't fail to tip, even if you drinks are comped. Change Person Don't forget to slip a few bucks to these folks – especially if you win. Don’t try to palm off a $5 tip for a Megabucks win; it's insulting! Remember, these are just suggestions – and you’re always welcome to tip more! Return to Index
The
Volcano at The Mirage Hotel
Before,
during, or after the Pre-Retreat Get
Together, be
sure to see the Volcano in front of the Mirage
Hotel, next to Caesars Palace Forum Shops.
Since its opening in 1989, the Mirage Volcano has been one of most popular attractions on the Las Vegas Strip. In 1996, the Volcano added new water, lighting, and sound effects. The Volcano has undergone another facelift. One of the most exciting highlights about the new volcano will be its music. Mickey Hart, the legendary Grateful Dead drummer, and Indian music composer Zakir Hussain worked together to create and perform a soundtrack exclusively for the Mirage Volcano. During the composing process, the two studied legends, myths, and history about volcanoes. As a result, they incorporated instruments from around the world. The musical masterpiece infuses chants, percussion, and other tribal elements. In addition to the intense music, the Volcano sound will come from actual eruption recordings. The Volcano's state-of-the-art sound system allows the audience to feel the rumble. "You're in the middle of the Volcano without actually getting hurt!" Hart said. "[It's] as real as you can be without experiencing the ash." Wet Design, the company responsible for The Fountains of Bellagio, is leading the design team for the Volcano. The $25 million project includes things like two Volcano systems, a lagoon, and fire shooters that shoot flames on demand. These massive fireballs are capable of shooting more than 12 feet into the air. The volcano also has waterfalls with surrounding pools featuring fire and smoke effects. The Mirage Volcano is open now and erupts nightly every hour on the hour from dusk until 11pm, weather permitting. Return to Index
New B.B.
King's Blues Club at The Mirage Hotel
For
dinner before, or live entertainment after the Pre-Retreat
Get
Together, you could try the new B.B. Kings Blues Club in The Mirage
Hotel, next to Caesars Palace Forum Shops.
The thrill is back. Southern food and Blues music take center stage at the Mirage with B.B. King's Blues Club. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night meals, B.B. King's introduces guests to a variety of Creole cuisine. Signature items include fried dill pickles, Gumbo Ya Ya Straight from the Bayou, Lip Smacking Ribs, Southern fried catfish and banana bread pudding. Signature drinks include Boll Weevil and the Wang Dang Doodle. Your stomach may be entertained by the fried food and Creole spices, but your ears will be overwhelmed by the soulful sounds of the Blues performed by not only a house band but plenty of guest entertainers. The 558-seat venue has four bars; one outside looking into the club and three inside, all with views of the stage and entertainment. The club also features a retail area where you can purchase souvenir T-shirts, glassware, guitar picks, and more. Return to Index

oasis with its 15 acre Wildlife Habitat which is free and

Full of photo opportunities, the habitat is filled with lush foliage imported from around the world including varieties of pines, palms, and magnolia. Visitors can take a stroll on winding walkways alongside streams and waterfalls, or on bridges over lagoons and ponds. Benches scattered throughout the area allow guests the chance to sit back and enjoy the view. The Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo is home to more than 300 birds, including Impeyn and silver pheasants, Gambel's quail, a Crown crane, two ibis, swans, ducks, and parrots. However, the most notable are likely the Chilean flamingos. But birds aren't the only wildlife that can be seen in the habitat; there is an abundance of turtles and koi as well. Return to Index
